gradient tools are used to give shine to the images. Use curves option if you need more shine...

if you want to create a glare (cast light) on an object you would use multiple gradients and a few layers. In certain situations (depending on the shape) you can use the Satin and Bevel/Emboss features in your layer styles. I used these when I created this vw emblem:
