I'm just getting into web design and a friend of mine said I should learn xhtml and css instead of dreamweaver. Aren't they kind of overlapping things? And ya, I guess I need to know those things but shouldn't I also know dreamweaver as well? Do you guys think dreamweaver is useless?

You won't learn XHTML or CSS through Dreamweaver. The WYSIWYG interface will automate some of the building for you, but you really need to get a handle of XHTML/CSS yourself. Dreamweaver tends to put a lot of unneccessary crap in your code if you don't know what you're doing.
