i got to this part of the bling bling text tutorial on good-tutorials.com:

You now have a blank layer with the outline of your word selected. Do not deselect it... this is the layer where the magic will happen.

Now take the gradient tool (with black to white) click the top of the selected area, hold shift and drag your mouse to the bottom of the area.

When done correctly it should look like the image below... only don't deselect yours. If you do, just control click the text layer then reselect this layer to get it back.

when i click+shift and drag it just makes part of it shaded as opposed to the top being black merging into white at the bottom, i am on adobe 7 can someone please help?

There are multiple gradient tools in Photoshop7! - You need to first decide if you are applying a gradient to the entire picture or just a layer? - Then, is this a colour gradient or a transparency gradient?

um i know that it needs to be applied to only 1 layer but i don't know what a transparency or a colour gradient is but i think it's colour.
