How difficult is it to make a marketplace website

Hello,

I am thinking of starting with a small scale marketplace website. On one end someone has something to sell, registers on the site, posts the item, and on the other end someone browses the offers and buys what she/he likes.

Are there any CMS solutions that can help in designing such a website ? i have looked into shopify but it seems that you can only shopify your own stock. I would help sell other peoples items. So the stock varies and is out of my control.

Can someone point me in the right direction ?

Very hard - something like Drupal + advanced Drupal developer would be my call. The main issue is security as you are effectively allowing a lot of people to add content to your application. Addding content isn't such a problem when it comes to adding posts and comments but this is products for sale.
