    Newbie – need directions

hi buzytee, i would have to agree with adamblan. there really is no surefire way for you to protect your copyrighted images. if someone really wants to use them...they will find a way to use them. your job would mainly be to make it as difficult as possible for someone to use them. one...

    Lightbox Question

I would suggest getting rid of the iFrame and replacing it with a div of the same dimensions. I'm assuming you like the fact that you can scroll up and down the iFrame. You can have something similar by giving the div specific height and width and adding "overflow:scroll;" to its css. Hope...

    Illustrator vs. Photoshop vs. Fireworks

Illustrator vs. Photoshop vs. Fireworks. Which of these programs (if any) do you use to layout your designs? Why do you use it? Personally I use Illustrator. It just seems pretty easy to me and I'm used to it. I guess I could learn how to do layouts in Photoshop or Fireworks, but at the...

    Help with navigation

You may want to change the order of your divs and place "navigation" before "content". Or you can do the following: Change: ul.navigation { width: 600px; height: 25px; float: left; text-align: center; } ul.navigation li { display: inline-block; margin-left: 10px; padding: 15px 20px; }...

    No portfilio

The great thing about web design is that you can showcase what you can do even though you don't have any clients. What I mean is...create some sites for non-existent companies. If you don't want to do that then simply tell your prospect that you are currently working on your portfolio and...

clients want to make updates... more stress?

Personally I use Wordpress as a CMS. I think it's one of the easiest to use. Joomla was a little too bulky for me. I design my site in Illustrator. Then I build and code it in Dreamweaver with a Wordpress plugin (I'm essentially building a Wordpress theme by doing this). I can then give my...

Is this a valid tool for a web designer to use?

I wouldn't say you don't have to use Dreamweaver. That is still a powerful tool. In fact, I use Dreamweaver with a Wordpress plugin that helps me to code my sites. In essence I convert all of my designs into Wordpress Themes.

    Finding clients

I agree with axzm. Go out to your local marketplace, introduce yourself and give out your business cards. More than likely you are sitting on a goldmine. There's tons of competition online for web designers. Set yourself apart as the web designer that will personally meet with your clients in...

    screen shots of websites

I would recommend using the Screengrab! plugin for Firefox. It lets you capture full-page screenshots as well as "whatever fits in the window" screenshots.

Is this a valid tool for a web designer to use?

Personally I use Wordpress as a CMS. I think that it is one of the best platforms to build websites on. It is highly customizable and there are tons of awesome plugins available for it. A CMS is not necessarily for designing a site. You would design the site's look on your own with a...

What is the must-have-list for a web designer

fs_tigre, The tools you need are simple: 1. A computer (I recommend a Mac, but that's not necessary). 2. Design software (photoshop, illustrator, fireworks, or any open source image editor) 3. HTML editor (Dreamweaver, NVU, textedit, notepad) 4. An internet connection. That's all...
