It looks like this site was built with Wordpress. If you are looking to build a Wordpress theme from scratch then you will need to learn PHP as well (sorry, can't help you with that as still working on CSS - PHP is next for me). You might have search for a Flash plug-in for the header.

Not sure I can help you with coming up with anything more efficient, but from practical experience I would suggest that you always backup what you have done before you do any editing - it can get very messy if you go wrong, so if need be you can go to your backup file and start again.

I have downloaded a Flash Gallery (from www.flash-gallery.org) and it works great, except for some reason it pulls down my header a little which then makes my navigation sidebar look wrong. Any ideas anyone? You can see what I mean at http://www.fenlandtextilestudio.co.uk/gallery.html

Think I have sorted this now - can save in a lower resolution in Gimp which cuts the file size considerably.

Thanks OrangeDevDesign for that! I don't have Photoshop - budget won't stretch to that at the moment. Just trying to get head around Gimp - there must be a way of reducing file size with that but haven't figured out how yet.
