    Question about web design

Also, if you're pressed for time, there are many online services that will code your site for you. Or ask a local webdesigner to do it for you, shouldn't cost much.

Here's how to get any lynda.com tutorial for free (seriously)

I signed up for the 7day trial, but they cancelled me 2 days in. Apparently, they don't consider trying to download their entire library a "trial!" ;) No worries though. I have almost 4gb of tutorials to wade through, after which I will probably sign up when I have the time to use it...

    Portfolio Website

"The little buggers can spawn in mass quantities and die from abuse and starvation." Hilarious. Issues much? The site looks beautiful, nice work. It might be too late now, but it's better to limit your site width to 960px, the horizontal scroll is annoying.

learning to design websites like a pro

What do you mean? w3c is where one goes to start learning web design, and professionals go from there. If that site is too complicated for you, you just need to slow down (or improve your english). The only software you should need to buy is photoshop, that's all, the rest is optional in my...

    The great mp3 player debate

Thanks for your reply. Are you sure the frame/iframe is not the other way around? According to w3c, iframes will be supported by html5 but not frames. Anyway, I have seen frames (but not iframes) used for this purpose. (This for example.) I think the best answer I've seen so far is outlined...

    Website cost

Whoa, time out here! Did you just say, on top of everything, that you have a BS in Information Technology? I don't have any tech degree at all (BM in Music 20 years ago) and I would have charged more than that! Don't you have student loans?

    Is IE6 Gone yet ?

Yes,if you ask me, we can now stop designing for IE6. If a client specifically asks for a site to work in IE6, well, you're stuck, but I think you should be able to charge extra for that. According to W3C, IE6 usage is under 10%, but that's the bottom 10% mind you.

    The great mp3 player debate

Hi forum, been awhile. I asked this awhile ago but I didn’t get the answer I was looking for, so I’ll go into more detail this time. I’m a full time musician who’s hoping to start a semi-successful business making sites for my fellow musicians, but there’s one design issue I can’t make peace...

    Musician Site

Ouch. Swing and a miss. I thought it was looking OK, but I just put those buttons on the sidebar, and I admit that made it look worse. I'm really hoping to start a career as a web designer this year (maybe I'm just trying too hard), but that's why I'd like to do it myself. If I choose some...

    recruitment website review

i think it looks good, I like the layout and the icons. The three big buttons at the top should have the entire button a hit state, not just the images within them. The top navigation bar buttons are not readable in the hover state, maybe change text to black. Looks good though.

    Dreamweaver file mismanagement

thanks lou, I changed the link setting from root to relative and re-linked a file with the draggy-thing in design view to see what happens. The link it made was /file, just like I have now to make my remote server work. Does this mean I have the testing server set-up wrong somehow? How did I...

    opacity question

cool, thanks for that link, PP. I'm a bit concerned about that the help guide says "Also, make sure that you are not trying to tile a 1x1px PNG background over a large element, as this will bring the browser to its kness -- make your images a little larger if you run into this :)." I'm...

    opacity question

This sounds like the same problem I originally posted. What should work-stating full opacity for the text and less for the background-doesn't. What I'm doing is using a transparent png for a repeating background. It's working fine, except in ie6, of course.

    FTP Errors??

Check the file name. If there are spaces in the file name, replace them with underscores. I've been disallowed putting files on my server for this reason.

    What do you think?

loads plenty fast, I agree on the darker font recommendation.

    Dreamweaver file mismanagement

I believe I’m making some kind of simple rookie mistake in setting up my dreamweaver site and I’m hoping one of the veterans out there can find the mistake before I do. I set up my local, remote and testing servers (MAMP) and got my site working fine while testing it on Firefox. I ran the...

    opacity question

Dang, so close! Hell has a room reserved for IE. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't know why I'm not using a png background image. It offers total control and no extra mark-up. Huh. I guess I always try things the hard way. I must say my site is getting a little bit trans-png...

    opacity question

Cool, thanks for that. The text looks much sharper that way. I changed the box color to black and it looked cleared still. I can forego semantics to get the right look, the problem of course is the user resizing the text. (BTW, is there a css rule that prevents resizing?) It looks bad to...
