Hello, I am trying to help my grandfather with his website. He's a great teacher but it seems like the website could use some design improvements. I'm decent at the coding of websites, just not the design side of things.

Would anyone have any design tips?

Yeah... I'm kind of with you, he spent a lot of time on it however and was looking over my shoulder as I wrote that. Anyway, any ideas for an easy way to get started that would require minimal work while still having a decent end result? I can write websites but like I said I am horrible when it comes to designing them.

the absolute first thing I would do would be to remove the background.

once thats gone you'll be able to see what you've got to play with.

admittedly the whole lot should not be in frames and it should not be in a table. that would be step 2 and 3.

OK, some major things:
Put the navigation horizontal at the top, not vertical at the side.
Remove the background image
Don't make everything italic font
Make the site 960px wide and center it
Not use GoDaddy hosting :p

Yep - if you want a quick way to get a reasonable looking site then get a wordpress site up and running - some nice themes around which don't cost the earth. If you are used to Wordpress you could have it all up and running in a day. For starters: http://demo.wpzoom.com/?theme=edupress. If you are not used to Wordpress then it'll take longer than a day obviously - but there's all the help in the world you need online.

Oh gosh. First off- way too blue! Needs images. Like someone said, I'd consider a complete overhaul. Look into wordpress maybe for a template because that would be a bit easier. Good luck.

Or you could try using some CMS like wordpress or joomla to try play around with different themes to change the look you desire. The one already on is looking a little ancient.

Agree with remove the background, looks better already.. concentrate on everything else then look at the background after?
