I am trying to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7.

The 32 bit Vista was installed by mistake. My system can handle a 64 bit OS. Now I have finally found the time to upgrade. But the 64 bit intallation DVD can't be read from my OS. Any Advice?

Do I need to boot from that DVD drive? Will that work?

Can't read the dvd? sounds like there is something wrong with your drive.

I would suggest a clean install if it's possible.

back up all your files, open the PC case, take out the hdd stick it in another box and wipe that baby clean. stick it back in the box and run the new version. all should be sweet to install, and vista, and all that comes with it will be gone. A secondary install on the drive or "upgrading" from vista will still leave traces of that abomination and your computer will always chug knowing it was tainted with that darkest moment of madness from M$...
