How to manage SEO process with clients?

I'm sure this is a question that comes up a lot, though I didnt see it on the first several pages of this section. I'm a web designer, and want to be able to offer SEO for clients. I have a basic knowledge, but don't really know how to pick the best keywords to go for, and how to charge, etc. Is there a good book on this subject? Or some good links? Thank you for any suggestions.

As a web designer who wants to promote or "offer" seo, the way you design sites and how they function should fundamentally be optimised for such.

The way the site is set out, document and folder names, pages titles, descriptions and the use of h1 and h2 tags and of course appropriate keyword selection will all help build a solid foundation to the sites overall PageRank performance. However as a web designer, there is only so much time you can allocate to research marketing and keyword selection and then of course copywriting! And of course dont forget a possible SEM strategy whilst you may be waiting for your seo efforts to take affect.

My advice to you would be to offer you knowledge in more of a consultancy type role, where your clients still provide content, but you simply review and modify it with your own research and knowledge in that field. Having said that, there would be nothing wrong in you picking up a new client who recently had their website completed and optimising it for seo. Then you would be performing the tasks of an "seo expert" and as such you can expect to be paid for your time spent on such tedious tasks.

Don't forget, for a client having their website designed by you, they may perhaps already feel somewhat overwhelmed with the process and mightn't understand the entire benefits of seo! therefore, it would be a shame to lose out on the job as it appears that you seem somewhat overpriced. Therefore, client selection is also a factor to consider.

In closing - whilst site engine optimisation is an ever ongoing process, it is at the design stage where it begins (you should highlight these points of difference to your clients) furthermore for knowledge, never stop reading and as a start the Google Webmaster Guidelines is a great place to begin. Then purchace any book on the subject as it will always cover something else that another book may have missed.

SEO includes not only keywords, but building links, writing blogs
and comments, creating site unique content. All this done to promote the site.
They help a lot on getting backlinks that is the key to rank on search engines.

When you guys are doing link-building for a client, and let's say you are going to use forums or blog comments for some of those links, how do you write the forum post or blog comments without having intimate knowledge of the specific industry?

I'm thinking about a client who is in a fairly technical field. Do you sign them (client) up for the forum and have them make post? Just curious.

The process of web submission tasks in outsourcing includes the blog submission, directory submission, search engine submissions
, article submissions, press release, classified ads and banner ads. The price of submissions varies in different countries and also depends on the infrastructure of companies. Apart from it includes the tasks of email marketing in the form of sending multiple emails to the client and creating, drafting and optimizing the newsletter content.

alfredwinston,

i'm not sure if you were responding to me or not but if you were i'm not asking how to perform submissions and what they are. i'm asking how you can make an intelligent submission on a blog or forum - given you (or your company) are not experts in your client's field.

seems like it would be better to set the accounts up including signature and then get them on a schedule to submit their own comments.

is that how most SEO companies handle this type of situation?

Bluecollar01, that is exactly what you should do! as i know there definitly would be no way for any of our employees to comment or write an intriguing article on a client's topic field of industry.

Furthermore, i thought this question related to seo at the designer stage!? For a web designer looking to incorporate these types of services? ie build an seo-friendly site!

Suggestions like increasing backlinks and blogs are often too overwhelming for a client to grasp at the design stage! More often than not, you will lose the client if you bombard them with too much technical information, task they must perform and ongoing fees! Furthermore, a client who knows or appreciates little about the entire process will not go forward with the project, especially after seeing the quote for design and seo!!

In blog commenting and forum posting it should be related to the niche of your site. You can get knowledge by reading blog and posting on forums topic related to your site.

I have a basic knowledge, but don't really know how to pick the best keywords to go for,

You can use some of the keyword suggestion/research tools:
