Getting my forum in the Google search results?

How can I get my phpBB3 forum to appear in the search results when I use Google search? I've read about META tags, AdSense, AdWords etc. but I'm still 101% clueless on how to achieve this.
It's a Movie Discussion Forum, non-profit. I'd like to keep it clean of banners and ads if possible BUT wanna find a way to have it pop up in the Google search results among other forums that are into movies as well. For example, when typing in "movies", "movie forum", "thriller movies" etc. it should appear in the search results (you get the idea).
I'm obviously no good in this "marketing" field, so some detailed inputs/guides would be much appreciated.

Before anything else, you should determine first what your target keywords, then make the metatags out of that. It should be specific enough. Don't choose competitive ones.

Ok first step done, now I know it's meta tags I need. As far as the keywords go, I pretty much have a complete idea what they should be.

Two questions though:
1) How to make meta tags for the forum? It's a phpBB3 board.
2) What would "competitive" keywords/tags be in my case? Forum content is basically a discussion about movies, actors, directors, genres etc.

EDIT: Are meta tags the only feature that determines how well placed will my forum be among the Google search results? Furthermore, are there any paid services that additionally help with search results besides installing meta tags?

Figured it out. Did a little research and found "phpBB SEO" for phpBB3. My God the installation cannot be more simple, at least from what I've read in the guide.

it wont just appear their, you have to try some SEO

keyword density and SEO can be applicable here..

have follow links and advertise as a do follow forum

Adding relevant, good and creative content to your site will help improve your ranking over time. Also, getting links to your forum from other sites through link exchanges or anything similar will also help you get you indexed faster and ranked higher (do not spam other sites though as that will hurt your ranking rather than help it). Overall though, it takes a new forum about a few weeks to begin appearing on Google or other search engines, so just be patient!
