I'm a bit confused here. Do Twitter and Facebook archive everything and how do we determine relevancy in these social media platforms? Overall I'm confused about getting backlinks here and what is the best strategy??

I'm not so sure about getting backlinks directly from the social media platform itself, as most will be no-follow links, but by creating a dialog and posting white papers, blog items, press releases or articles you've built creates a greater opportunity for backlinks.

Additionally, many "SEO authorities" believe that social media/popularity are now being factored into the organic algos. So, it behooves the SEO proponents to at least have some aspect of social media as part of their SEO strategy.

That helps, thanks. I have been hearing that too, that the crawlers are going to eventually be looking for trends and what not in social media, so I feel like the best strategy is going to be simply to create buzz and stay active in the community. I know that the shortened URL's are usually 301's I will be interested to see if they start popping up as backlinks regardless of the no-follow. Constant change...

Social media links (or links from Facebook, Twitter, etc) are nofollow, so Google won't count them as backlinks. However, the good thing about these links is that you can generate tons of traffic from them.

They will appear in webmaster tools as backlinks, but they wont pass "link juice". That's what we think anyway, since you never know what Google does :)

basically there are 2 types of link backs - Do follow and no follow and Social Networking websites only provide no-follow linkbacks that does not have any value or linkjuice to boost your PR. but it could improve your traffic when done correctly.

Better is you work in facebook and twitter to get tons of traffic.Because the ultimate goal of achieving backlinks is to get rank high in search engines and get traffic.

You wont get backlink from them, and Google won't give you any credit if they find your site on those two. However, you can benefit greatly, simply by getting direct traffic, since those are site with extremely high user population.

You will get backlink, but it will be nofollow ;)

Some rumors suggest that Google passes some anchor text power to the linked pages. Matt Cutts said that is not true but I have some doubts if he said the truth.

I think that using "link bait" such as blog post, white paper downloads, etc. through the social media platforms can indirectly generate links. People see the link and possibly post it on their blog, on a forum or a resource site.

By and large though I think that social is primarily for branding, traffic generation and some metrics such as "like" may now being factored into the search algos.

I think all links help, even nofollows but they have an extremely small impact. Like mentioned earlier, who really knows what Google does?

Do-follow and No-follow

Upon reading all your insights and further discussions about back links in Social Media gives some information to us and was learning about it.

But please would you explain further and deeply the difference between Do-Follow and No Follow link? And why become link juice?

I will be back soon to know your answer so that it will enhance my knowledge and understanding about search engine optimization.

Follow vs. NoFollow links

Follow links means that the search engine will follow the link and this link is effective. In other words, follow link = working link.

NoFollow links are the opposite!

Social media links are not really designed as a source of backlinks. They are rather an effective generator of traffic. Take advantage of that.

Google really won't give your website any backlinks through these websites, hwoever it's a great way to receive direct traffic from people clicking on the links you post.
