Well, I use alt tags in all my images. That's very important in image ranking, especially in Google.

Optimising images for the web is a tricky business. You have to get the right balance between filesize and picture quality. It is an essential step though. Look at any webpage, and you will see that most of its load time comes from images. Your website will be needlessly slow if you don't drop the sizes of these images.

what about names of images we put on our websites? Is it important to name them using keywords?

I believe some people above are referring to image optimization for web as it pertains to size and speed efficiency and others are referring to image optimization for SEO purposes.

SEO purposes:
- Use alt tags
- name file with descriptive keywords
- submit image to sites like flickr, picasa, etc.

Google's image bot is very slow and may only visit a site once every 3 or 4 months - be patient.
