I am considering to buy an old domain with a high PR where the main purpose is to have many links on it and in exchange having the websites behind the links pointing at my "real" website.

This way I don't have to "pollute" my real website with a bunch of links plus my real website is rather young=PR1 and in order to get link exchange agreements with the big boys then I must have at least 3.

What are people's opinion about this idea? Is it considered good SEO practice?

Hi Camilo

I have seen other company's do it and they are still selective about who to link to from the "passive" site, which means that only partners that have relevance to your real site are included.

They has been a lot of buzz about link wheel. It could be argued that this is just the same principel but I'm asking because I don't know the business ethics when it comes to SEO.

artorro, what you're suggeting does sound clever in theory however there are a number of issues with it.

Firstly, the old domain name with high PageRank (which you're thinking of buying) has a high PageRank because of the content it holds or did once hold. Granted a domain name rich in keywords will index highly if those keywords are searched directly, however, once your direct that URL to point to your site it wont be indexed to have that content any longer, unless your current site is of somewhat a related nature and has similar content!

Furthermore, depending on how many URLs you have redirecting to your site, google will begin to remove its weighting factor on how your page ranks (regardless of its strong keyword presence).

Finally dont forget, that if the URL has little to do with your origional site, not only will its PR suffer as a direct affect of google, but users will not return and obviously this will have major effects on your site traffic, which in turn affects your google PR again!

My suggestion, if you feel your current niche is too difficult to obtain a high PR, purchase a specific domain name with a decent amount of local searches to boost traffic to your site. Even if there are only minimal searches, if they are specific, then they will equate to goal conversions.

I am thinking about buying an old domain that has content that can still be used. I am going to look for a site with an index page that doesn't have much content.

regarding the linking, I think you have misunderstood. There is not gonna be a direct link from the "passive" to the "real" site or vice versa. The links will be like this:
Passive site -> numerous content-relevant websites -> My Real/Commercial site.

Are you suggesting to purchase an old domain name that already has high PR and then link to my site? If that boosts my traffic then it's definitely also a good suggestion because it doesn't require any work like the tedious link building but just a small invest.

It would be a good strategy, but I don't think it'll help you succeed in the long run. PR isn't always fixed plus not all sites are willing to do link exchange with other sites.
