External program launch?

Howdy...how do I make a link so that when you click it it will launch an external program. In other words, I want to list a server ip for a game server, and when somebody clicks it, I want the game to launch directly to that server.

I believe it would work on the same principle as connecting to an IRC server through a link, although I could be wrong. If it does, as long as the person hitting the link has the required game, etc on their computer, you would need only hyperlink to the server to become connected. This works only if you have the right software, depending on the game, chat program or whatever.
