Default Alternative fonts and design

I have a question in regards to fonts and web design. I am a design hobbyist and have begun to do a site here and there.

I would like to know how to take ensure a font that most people don't have on their computer shows up as the font on the page within the content.

Is there a way to include a font file so the font I select and use (regardless of the viewer having it on their computer) will be the font that shows?

I don't want have to use images just to display the font of my choice.

Thanks...

Thomas
