Good content seems to be the cheapest way to go! When you don't have cash to advertise then it's got to be Content, content, content!

I'm doing the above things right now to get my site of the ground.
Posting in targeted forums & blogs seems to be quite effective for generating traffic. It's only been online for about a week, and I'm starting to get a few inbound links already, however nobody seems to sign up for my (free) service.

Are there particular things one can do to increase the sign-up rate for a website?

Have you tried posting your service in any on-line Classified Ads how about Social Bookmarking? Better try these SEO Strategies.
