It depends what country you are in, it is better to buy from the same country and make sure they have good support in case you need any assistance. But prices can vary a lot so shop around, I know a lot of registrars in the UK have been putting their prices up recently because of the exchange rate with the US dollar.

Hey Herman,

You might be better off looking for a hosting company first if you don't already have one. A lot of the shared web hosting providers give you one free domain when you sign up with them.

They said that the information I gave them had discrepencies.
The discrepencies could have been as simple as a typo or someone else with the same name. I've had very good luck with godaddy. I know those things are annoying. I've dealt with that from a hosting company. I would advise against buying your domain name from a provider unless you know they are good. I did that once and had to leave the host but never got my domain back. They wanted an ridiculous amount of money to unlock it.

I think Godaddy is still the best domain name provider. I often buy domains there and use discount coupons.

Thats crazy that they would ask you for a copy of your drivers license like that....Are you located in the United States? I know that GoDaddy quit doing business in China because the Chinese government require's everyone who lives in that country to provide a copy of some sort of photo id when purchasing a domain name......You can pretty much buy a domain from anywhere....the question really is "whats a fair price for a domain name" I would say a fair price is anywhere from $2.99 up to $15.00 - Some companies offer a free domain with a hosting plan.

I would personally go with Godaddy.com for domains, they are pretty benefical and will be around for a long time. I currently have about 50 registered with them.
