Creating an online booking/scheduling system for a personal site

I'm looking to create a schedule on a personal site for visitors to view a calendar, see available and booked dates, and book/schedule open dates. Has anyone created anything similar? Is .ASP or .PHP best for this? What should I use to create the calendar?

I'm new to this and would greatly appreciate any assistance or direction...

Students are issued with tokens that they can redeem, booking studio and equipment in each term. These tokens will expire at the end of every term and any balance that the students may have will not be carried forward to the next term. This ensures that students do not make any payments to anyone in order to book the room or equipment.
