im quite savvy with programs and the net, but i have never really gotten into full on web page design/editing.

ive been asked to edit some information on my restaurant website.

specifically i have to edit the Text in the 'Menu' page and the 'Story' page
how do i go about this?
any advice on a program? how to import and edit this?

when I have to make a quick edit to a file that is already on the server I usually use WinSCP (http://winscp.net/eng/index.php), or if I am already logged into the cPanel, if the account has a cPanel, I use the FileManager there. Otherwise You could use any ftp program.... winscp does ftp and sftp... and download the files, exit them on your machine, then re upload them.

Oh, WinSCP has an option where you can log into a server, using ftp or sftp, and then right click on a file, select edit, and it will open up the built in text editor for winscp.. :-)
