Joomla friend or foe?

In these "open source" times, everybody likes the idea of being able to upload their own content to their sites, CMS really helps to people with small web knowledge. I've tried many CMS versions and I really enjoy coding them, it is very easy but once Joomla comes out I don't know if consider it friend or foe. I will tell some experiences:

Two months ago I had to code a website, the client wanted it in Joomla, then I started to work on the site and I really did well, I sent daily updates to my client until everything was 100% done. That's the happy part of the story, when I was about to make the last correction to my work I tried to login with the same user and password and guess what? Joomla didn't allow me to login, it didn't even say that I had the wrong user name and password, it simply didn't allow me to login and all my work was blocked. I had to start the project from zero with another CMS software, 1.5 weeks went to the trash because of Joomla!!! this is not fair. I am lucky that my client totally understood my problem.

I think Joomla is very resourceful and everybody loves it but I really don't, it is not as easy to handle as everybody thinks, I have tried older versions and they seem to have a cleaner platform, but people is always interested in last versions ( the ones with lots of bugs) . I consider it is irresponsibility to release an massive "open source" with so many bugs.

I am writing this post because I want to know the opinion of my fellow members, this is really frustrating and annoying when something like that happens. My advice is: if you are about to use Joomla, use an old and steady version or don't use it!! you will have troubles in some stage of your project.

Okay Im biased. I work withe Joomla all the time, and I LOVE it.

Although, you post an interesting question regarding the admin login. If you forget the password there doesnt seem to be a way to retrieve this, unless you have a hosting package and ask the host.

Im trying to find out more for me (than convincing you that Joomla's great

) ill let you know if I find anything.

There is always a way. The userid/password you entered is stored in whatever database backend you use (usually MYSQL). What you could've done is create a new Joomla instance, dump the user file. Then delete the user file from the instance you are having problems with and load in the new one. That most likely would have gotten you in.

All that said I've just start looking at CMS packages and Joomla is the one I've decided to run with (for the moment) so I don't have lots of experience with it.

I really like the back end usability and to me it seems quite stable. The only limitation I can see so far is the fact that you can only break articles down to section/category level where as the project I am working on looks like I might need a sub-category...

Ive used Joomla in several websites and I love it as well. Ive never had to reset the password, but jnjc is right, there is always a way with mysql. Log in and find the admin password entry (or go to joomla forums and search, Im sure this isnt the first time someone has forgotten their password). But back on the subject Joomla rocks!
