Why .com extension?

Why do people all over the world prefer .com extension in their domain name?

I don't. I prefer .org TLDs. .com just strikes me as corporate and stale.

.com is the most popular because most companies use it to portray a professionalism. It was also created for companies. You should be using the top level domain for your country if you are not using the .com for your business. only use appropriate domains for your web site .org is for organizations so don't use it as a personal or company web site.

Its not so much that its that popular anymore, now its more the fact that people know of it. It was originally created for companies and since there are more company websites as opposed to personal and other sites on the web then it became the most popular. Personally I prefer .org or .net, but .com is definitely better for a company as (mentioned above) it portrays professionalism and looks more business-like.

dotcom is most popular not only among webmasters, but from usual people on the net - this is the first TLD comes across the mind.
