not sure about the yellow, but i think it is a real improvement over your old design. looks good.

Do you think I should try different shades of yellow or a different colour completely?

different shades might work, but they would need to be very very different shades to what you currently have.

use web 2.0 gradients instead of plain colors or at least use a darker background with that light blue
a nicer banner too would make the difference

i would scrap the yellow if i were you and try something else. a gradient might be a nice touch as someone else suggested.

i think i like the yellow better than pink and green. other than that, both of the layouts you have posted in this thread are pretty good. i like elements of both, so i am not sure which like better purely from a layout perspective.
