LOL. That's what I thought too. No, they aren't serious - it's just Google doing their usual April Fools pranks. They had a little fun with Google Maps too from what I hear.

In 1983 I attended the euro cast '83 exhibition (cable and satalite television) where a company from Sheffield England was demonstrating a little robot crawler device that could pull a fibre optic cable through a four inch soil pipe. So maybe rear end data traversal is not so strange as it seems.

As far as following and laying fiber 'alongside' existing municipal water/sewer lines - I hear that has already been done in a few cities. I don't see why not - all utilities tend to follow each other around anyway. And with robotics - it could be done with minimal above ground disturbance I should think.

I think they should have more believable April Fools day ideas, but then people have become accustomed to the google April Fools day prank.
