Hi,
I'm getting too much spam on my forums. I use older software that doesn't have captcha or verification questions. Does anyone know any good forum scripts? I need some or all of: capatcha verification questions like 2 + 4 etc checks stopforumspam.com database has to be easy to delete a user and all their posts so far I've found: www.simplemachines.org and http://www.webwiz.co.uk/web-wiz-foru...m-features.htm Any others? Thanks, Andy |

I run a SMF forum with the Stop Forum Spam plugin which blocks ~ten registration per month, the forum is actually a private one, no public promotion has been or will be done, and needs admin approval to join but nonetheless they keep trying.
I also run a Joomla! (webmaster-talk.eu/) which was on SMF previously, site with the Kunena forum extension that also uses the SFS plugin. Which, since January has blocked 2,795 spammers from registering, and in that same period there has been only THREE spammers that needed to be dealt with manually. One thing that Kunena forum has over all the one we tested (including Vb4 and Invision) is the "fine grain" permissions and access control that can be set to user groups and/or individual users

If you decide on phpbb make sure you keep up to date with patches and updates and be wary with what "plugins" and "extensions" you install. Its popularity and nature of the usual administrator/operator userbase which are mostly newbies to forum management makes it about the most attacked discussion board.
Have a read at TAZ to get an idea on things you need to know before diving in head-first. Also have a look around the SecuriTeam for any unpatched exploits that are "in the wild". PhpBB is pretty simple to get to grips with but can be also fairly simple to "break into", and many of the themes/skins do look a bit "retro" MyBB is another "starter" discussion board that may be worth a lookover.
