Default Logo review please

So I'm more of a coder and I'm building up my portfolio finally. I'm trying to get my feet wet with the graphic design portion, please critique my 2 logos and be harsh.

The attached images do it no justice btw, they look better to me on my dev site, check out dev.ctrl-alt-designs.com if the quality looks bad.

Default Your Logos

I think your logos could be improved by trying to simplify them. For instance the Blue logo, lose the vertical lines separating the CAD. They do not really serve a purpose other than complicating the logo for the viewer. It is also to create a "mark" that makes your logo memorable. CAD is does not really make you stand out. One feature to think about when design a logo is to think about the viability of that logo being part of a bigger system of icons that will represent your brands. I could go on and on, but those are a few things that jump out at me.

The top logo's font is pretty dated. I would just make a few more and once your juices start flowing you'll end up with a better result than you thought you would.

Honestly, it looks like something walked out from a 70's fiction movie... Try some bright color and effects.

I would agree on adding some bright colors and effects. It looks dry on my eyes. Not that interesting. Sorry to be blunt.

Talking to the rescue!

For those of you who do not work with programmers..
adding SOME bright colors is still much too vague for developers trying to learn design.. lol

@ctrlaltdesigns they all have the idea right, but in the spirit of teaching..
I do like the keyboard idea better.. since with initials "CAD" it makes me think of several things waaay before web design..

you definitely need to simplify things a lot. you can always make a 3d version of your logo for certain projects later. you want your original to be
1. VECTOR
2. SIMPLE enough to put through a fax machine and still be recognizable.. if anyone still has a fax machine?.. not the point
3. actually just go read this
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009...e-logo-design/

now.. i went and found an ugly keyboard stock photo so you can see more of what i'm talking about. Here's an idea for you if you want to keep the keyboard theme for your logo.

Look at these simple logos: http://webdesignledger.com/inspirati...ve-logo-design

..and recreate/simplify the one i attached

cheers!

ps.. looking at this again, the return arrow is somewhat distracting on top of all the shadows/ rushjob grunge. I think it's because it is aligned with the ctrl/alt labels so you read it "louder"

I think it's not very attractive. Remember that a logo has to be remarkable. You can try rearranging the layout.

And do you do any C.A.D. (Computer Aided/Assisted Drawing/Draughting) work?
Because that is what your "logo" is going to tell them you do.

I believe you can improve your logo and make it better.
