What is your favorite text editor for the system(s) you use? Mine is Notepad++ on Windows. (Still wishing I had a Mac so I could use Coda)

Notepad++ is great. I use it as my default editor for just about all text-based files. For heavier coding, I use MS WebMatrix, mostly for its built-in webserver.

Coda is indeed great. For Windows I use WeBuilder. Built-in FTP function, one-click installation of PHP server, internal preview in IE and FF, and a lot more. Great price-quality ratio, if you ask me.

I also like Notepad which although has been a fixed part of all Windows operating systems since years ago, but it still is useful and powerful. Word too can be great to use and as you may guess contains more features when it comes to doing some decorative jobs. Since this question has been posted in web related section of the forum, it is nice mentioning this point that Notepad is still the standard tool when it comes to working on basic HTML codes as well as even advanced CSS scripts.

Experts are able to hand-code the projects simply through using Notepad and as soon as you take a glance at web server roots and folders of most modern websites these days which have been powered by templates, you will find CSS text files which have been purely created via using the basic Notepad. Although trying to work with modern tools while trying to develop websites is always nice, but there is nothing wrong with returning back to the basic assets and tools sometimes.

I mean why would use something as basic as notepad when they're are better alternatives - all, for example, with syntax highlight, and most with the ability to collapse/expand sections fo code?

there's ntohing wrong with using notepad if you want but I think the claims in your post are optimistic at best

Don't ever use Word for web page creation!! It generates code that not even IE understands anymore!! Use tables, use iframes, I don't care, but don't even think about using Word for this job!!

spot on frank the only thing in this job I hate more than psd>html, flash, tables and IE6 is word.
its bad enough when a client uses it and destroys the page but a "designer" I mean come on!

To be fair, the question was asking what your favorite text editor is. Certainly, Word is better for that than Notepad, especially if you want to add color or change fonts or the like. For web design? Total crap. Building on Frank's point, tables within iframes inside a table with an image map for navigation would be better.
