Microsoft operating systems I like notepad++

Linux I like vi / vim

I really like jEdit due to its built-in plug-in downloader and its support for many different programming languages and operating systems. I use it for HTML and CSS coding, primarily. I also have and use occasionally Notepad++ and Active State Komodo Edit.

The notepad that windows comes with sometimes does funky things to code. I don't like it. notepad++ is free and a lot better.

i used basic in the derogatory sense - my words but your meaning

notepad+ for example is not what you called bloated but offers more functionality than just notepad.
