I really like jEdit due to its built-in plug-in downloader and its support for many different programming languages and operating systems. I use it for HTML and CSS coding, primarily. I also have and use occasionally Notepad++ and Active State Komodo Edit.

The notepad that windows comes with sometimes does funky things to code. I don't like it. notepad++ is free and a lot better.
