Default My own website, layout questions

In July 2011 I created a website called: "A revision of nurse uniforms - past and present" (http://oesermaatra0069.hostoi.com/version_new/). The website is a mirror of a website: Nurse uniforms - past and present. (http://dyk.homestead.com/), a twelve year old website collecting images of nurses in their uniforms. The site had now, I think, 8000 or more images of nurses. These images are not sorted and collected in "pages" from 1 till 400.

My website is an answer to these unsorted pictures. To sort these pictures in series (you can think about a digital stamp collection). The whole website is programmed by me. Layout css is from wikimedia and dynamic drive and my own layout.

I have a question to you all:
  • What do you think about the general layout?
  • What can be better in your opinion?
  • Do you have any recommendations about the menu at the left? Does red color scare people?

new is most certainly an improvement on the old, but it does look like, well, a wiki.

The nav is a little cryptic and the submenu galleries would also be best served in a menu of their own rather than a form field.

Thanks for the comments, Phreaddee. It really surprised me the navigation is cryptic. Rather than a menu I could create an unordered list of galleries, or a table with a little explanation of what it is. Would that be clear? A to think it as a separate menu, I cannot image how to implement it.

Please explain what you mean with "master image listing".

A changed these pages: http://oesermaatra0069.hostoi.com/ve...rtisements.php and http://oesermaatra0069.hostoi.com/ve...w/catalogs.php

The select & submit button is now gone, now a table with a quick description of the page.

Could somebody please review the new change on my website? The menu has been changed. The forms has been changed to colorful tables. Please let me know what you like or dislike..

On your galleries it might help if instead of:

"cat0044.jpg: 3 scans from an old Alexandra catalogue.Country: Great-Britain.Series: Alexandra Workwear.Year: 1980."

having this as a run on, but put a line break after each category the image fits in.

Thank you Absolution! I correct this, and I agree with you it looks better. See this url: http://oesermaatra0069.hostoi.com/ve...agai_leben.php

Is there something else I can correct?

I'll have to look at it more when I find more free time. But the logo in the upper left corner looks a bit blurry or too compressed. You can redesign it in the vector program http://inkscape.org/ . In this way it will look crisp at any size. Ideally you can save the image as an svg, however browsers only recently started supporting this, so I recommend png instead.
