Default Help Making a Site for the First Time?

I'm familiar with coding and know how to design a site but I have never actually had one on the internet. I have a vps that I use as a minecraft server but it has two IP's so I figured I might as well just use the other one for my site. I need to register a domain, but all the results I got from Google wanted me to pay like $20/month, which I can't do. Is there anyway to pay a one time fee or to make it by yourself? Also any advice or tutorial links as to how to set up the site with my server would be helpful.

Minecraft is fun! I think a lot of those places which want you to pay $20 a month are offering hosting services which you don't need. You can check out this topic on which places you might want to register domain names with, should only cost you $20 year for a domain. Starting A New Website I use godaddy, but a lot of people dont like them.

To serve webpages over the net you will most likely need the apache software http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi (free) I am not too familiar with using it myself. But other people on the forum are definitely more experienced. Before you buy a domain name though make sure people can see your webpage by typing in the IP address.

One last hitch! I know for domain names you need to list a DNS server. I am not sure what you need to do for that.

I believe you should build a site and only then go to host it. Site should be Optimized for Search engines, and it has to be usable for visitors.

In fact you are still a lot better than me when I first started to make my own site. I know nothing about HTML before to be honest. The problem though for you is that, it seems like you don't like to spend anything for it. In this case, I can suggest places such as Blogger, Weebly, Webs, etc. You can still make your own domain name there and be a subdomain under their site.

It's really hard if money is the problem but I hope you can produce some soon because it's really a lot better if you spend a bit to buy a domain name and pay for your hosting.
