I have two clients one wanting an eCommerce sports cards website and the other wanting a customized sports blog (both marketing the same sports). Would it be a good idea to attach the sports blog to the eCommerce site (same domain)? I was hoping the combination of the two would help each other in SEO Rankings, but the sports blog may not ever mention the word "card" or "cards" in it, but will repeatedly write unique articles about the related sports. Considering how search engines weigh keyword density, is this a good idea?

yes this would be a good idea. The visitors interested in reading about the sports on the blog may be interested in the sports cards for sale and vice versa.
The content on the blog will be directly related to the sports cards ecommerce site. Google will reward unique content. The blog will provide you with a lot of inbound marketing and ranking opportunities. |

I agree it will have great value to your clients. But I would suggest to keep both domains separate to avoid conflict.
