Interactive image but not an image-map or flash.. possible?

Hello I'm working on a web site that is supported by an image that I would like to change when some one hovers over a link (apart from the image). I don't want to make one big image-map because that will take too much time too load. This is the idea:

Any help would be very much appreciated.

How about using javascript (jquery)?
